Malayalam is the language spoken in the Indian state of Kerala. The language has its own script known as Malayalam that consists of letters from both the Tamil and Sanskrit alphabets. There is no admission fee collected and tourists can go on a self-guided tour for as long as they like on any given day. The best times to visit these museums are in the morning when the staff have just opened for business. Thrissur Museum has exhibitions that include ancient coins, sculptures, bronze idols and inscriptions dating back to 100 BC. The Changanacherry Museum is named after the town in which it is found. The museum contains paintings, sculptures, manuscripts and even an exhibition of traditional furniture from Kerala. The building itself was built in 1912 by the British to serve as a courtroom. However, this was not to be its purpose for long. It eventually became a courthouse but was again converted into a museum in 1984. The Thrissur Museum is a collection of traditional arts and crafts from Kerala. It contains traditional Meenakshi figures, gold and silver works and weaponry. This museum has a variety of exhibits that depict the history of the region as well as objects that were used for worship and religious ceremonies. Ancient coins and sculptures made out of old coins are also on display at this museum. There is also an exhibition about the Ramayana story written in Sanskrit by Kalidasa. The Archaeological Museum at Cochin was the first museum in India to be founded after Independence. The museum has many relics that date back to the Sangam period. The oldest items in the museum are dated back to 2500 years old. Thrissur Zoo houses a large number of native and exotic animals in its 44-acre compound. It is home to two elephants, four tigers, sixteen lions, many deer and antelope's, bison's birds and reptiles from around the world. Tourists from all over the world come here to explore this zoo because it boasts a wide variety of species from all habitats around the world. The Zoo Safari Park at Vazhappilly allows tourists to get up close and personal with a variety of wildlife from around the world.
